Newcastle basketballers in Australian Pearls team

Larry Davidson, head coach of the Pearls (the Australian Women's team for players with an Intellectual disability), has selected a young team for the sixth INAS-FID World Basketball Championships to be played in Portugal in November 2010.

“With several of our experienced players retired or unavailable for selection, we are taking a young team to the World Championships," said Davidson.

"This will ensure the Pearls have a broader experience base when looking at selection in 2011 for the next Global Games
Recently confirmed as the number one ranked women's team in the world (in their classification) the Pearls have a rich history of success,” said Davidson.

Eleven year veteran, Nicole Skerman, from Queensland will be supported by experienced players Karina Baines (Penrith, NSW), Eliza Barden (Orange), and Mina Aldobasic and Kaitlyn Papworth (Melbourne).
Taking their second tour for the Pearls are Bernadette Barden (Orange) and Melissa Marlborough (Newcastle).

Five players will be making their International debut in Portugal, including Nicole Harris (Newcastle), and four players from Melbourne - Danni Burden, Sam Hough, Monique Favero and Natasha Excell.

“I am excited by the youth, fitness and enthusiasm that these new players bring, which complements the experienced players," said Davidson.

"Our team has a good balance to it and the experience that will be gained at these Championships will provide an excellent platform for the future.”

The Pearls will depart Australia mid-November for the World Championships.

Newcastle cricketer Emma Collard takes out country bowling award

Congratulations to Emma Collard (Newcastle City) who took out the bowling aggregate and average for the under 19's section of the Country Women's Championship despite being just 14 years of age.

Emma could have played U/15's but was instead instrumental in helping the U/19's Newcastle team to a credible 3rd place in the carnival while the under 15's team placed 6th. Well done to the team.
