Newcastle women basketballers push Bruins
In their last match of the season the Newcastle Hunters women’s Waratah Australian Basketball League (WABL) team took on the ladder leading Bankstown Bruins. As expected, the Bruins took a lead into the main break (28-23). The Bruins continued their dominance by winning the third quarter by 22-15 to lead by 50-38 going into the final period.
A strong finish by the Hunters saw them win the 4th quarter by 24-17 to reduce the gap but unfortunately the margin was too much and they lost their final match of the season by 67-62. Kristen Forbes (21) and Katie-Rae Ebzery (14) were the top scorers for the Hunters while Jamie-Lee Samuels dominated the point scoring for the Hornets.
The Hunters women’s team finished 7th just one position outside the play-offs. The Newcastle WABL men had a bye on the final weekend of the preliminary rounds and finished 10th overall.
