Newcastle shocks Sutherland Sharks in Waratah Basketball
The bottom placed Newcastle Hunters men’s team have shocked the visiting Sutherland Sharks men’s team in the Waratah basketball clash last weekend. The Hunters took a one point lead into half time (52 – 51). At the end of the third term the Sharks had levelled at 76 apiece. However, the Sharks 7 man roster could not maintain the pressure against Newcastle’s 10 man team in the final term which the Hunters won 34 -18 to take the match by 110 – 94.
Top scorers for Newcastle were Mathew McGovern (34), Mathew Cook (24), Mathew Mujic (15) and Adoc Makwai (14). For the Sharks Brendon Gleeson and Luke Davies both scored 17, Steven Hall picked up 16, while both Blake Stroh and Blake Henricks scored 14.
After the Sharks loss they dropped from 6th to 8th on the ladder while the Hunters still sit at the bottom of the ladder.
Next Saturday (July 11) both the Newcastle Hunters Waratah Basketball league teams travel to Bankstown Basketball Stadium to take on the Bruins with the Women’s game tipping off at 3pm followed by the men’s at 5pm..

Maitland Mustangs move up basketball ladder
The Maitland Mustangs Waratah men’s basketball team has moved from 8th to the play-off 6th position due to favourable results last weekend. The Mustangs played their part by defeating rivals for the play-offs the Bankstown Bruins by 92 – 85. The Mustangs had finished the first half trailing the Bruins by 46-45 but then a dominant third quarter from the Mustangs (27 – 16) gave the home side enough breathing space to resist the Bruins final quarter challenge which Bankstown won by 23-20.
Top scorers for the Mustangs were Daniel Proctor (26), Joshua Clifford (21), Andrew Mortimore (15) and Mathew Dick (14). The Bruins top scorers were Greg Barnes (23) and Clint Reed (14).
The Mustangs next game is against the Sydney Comets at Alexandria Basketball Stadium tipping off at 6.30pm on Saturday July 11.
The Mustangs move up the ladder was helped by Newcastle’s win over the Sharks which saw Sutherland drop from 6th to 8th.
Newcastle and Hunter Schoolboys Junior Rugby League Competitions extended
The Newcastle Schoolboys Junior Rugby and the Hunter Valley Competitions have been extended 1 week till the 1st August. Grand Finals will now be held 29th August.

Register for Sydney’s World Masters Games by July 31
There is still time for Newcastle sportsmen and women to register for Sydney’s World Masters Games in Sydney. Over 6700 people have registered for the World Masters games in Sydney on October 10 -18, 2009. Over 28 sports will cater for participants of varying standards and ages.
For example, tennis has singles, doubles and mixed doubles in ten year age brackets from 30+ to 80+ with A grade for competition players and B grade for social players and beginners. Basketball will cater for social to elite teams from 30+ to 70+ in 5 year ranges.
Other sports include archery, basketball, football (soccer), netball, swimming and touch football
